GEL vs LFP Battery: How to Choose for Your Outdoor Surveillance Tower

GEL vs LFP Battery: How to Choose for Your Outdoor Surveillance Tower

When picking a battery for your solar CCTV tower, many people get stuck between GEL and LFP. There is no single right answer. It depends on how long you will use the project, your local climate, how much power your gear needs, and whether you move the tower often. Here are four key points to help you decide.

1. How many years will the project run?

This is the most important question.

Two years or less for temporary sites or rental equipment. GEL is enough. Low initial cost and you do not care about long term degradation.

Five years or more for border posts, pipeline monitoring, or fixed locations. LFP makes more sense. It costs more first but lasts 8 to 10 years without replacement. GEL needs a new set roughly every three years. Adding labor and shipping, LFP ends up cheaper over the full life. This is especially true for a mobile surveillance trailer that may be redeployed often.

2. Local climate – cold or hot?

Winter below minus 15 degrees Celsius for places like Nordics or Canada. GEL loses noticeable capacity in freezing weather. LFP also feels the cold but you can add a heating pad. Overall LFP behaves better. Go LFP plus heating.

Summer above 40 degrees Celsius for places like Middle East or Southern Europe. GEL hates heat. Every 10 degree rise cuts its life roughly in half. LFP handles heat much better and runs fine at 45 degrees. Go LFP.

Moderate climate with no extremes. GEL is perfectly fine. No need to spend extra.

3. Power draw and do you move the tower often?

Low power at 50 watts or less and short runtime of 1 to 2 days. GEL handles it easily.

High power at 100 watts or more and long runtime of 5 to 8 days. If you still use GEL, the battery pack becomes very heavy. A 10kWh GEL can be 200 to 300 kilograms, awkward to move on a trailer. The same capacity LFP is half the weight and one person can handle it. For demanding applications, a mobile security tower with high consumption should consider LFP.

Fixed location and rarely moved. GEL weight does not matter much so save money.

Frequent relocation like rental or moving between sites. LFP is light, easy to reposition, and puts less strain on the trailer suspension. GEL needs mechanical help or several people every time. Labor adds up.

So high load plus long runtime plus frequent moves means go LFP without hesitation.

4. Safety and environmental requirements

GEL has proven safe over decades. The electrolyte is fixed in gel so no leakage under normal use. But disposal is hazardous waste which can be troublesome.

LFP is the safest lithium technology today. It has very high thermal stability and almost no fire or explosion risk. No heavy metals and it meets EU RoHS and green procurement standards.

If your project is near chemical plants, nature reserves, water sources, or the client asks for environmental certification, choose LFP.

How BIGLUX configures its units

Standard unit comes with GEL battery. It has been proven on European construction sites, ports, and mines for years. Works well.

Upgrade option is LFP battery. It is for cold regions, heavy load long runtime needs, and customers who want lightweight or lowest long term cost.

Whichever battery you choose, we pair it with a Victron or EPEVER MPPT controller with proper charging algorithms. You do not need to adjust anything yourself.
