The Texas Electric Reliability Commission, or ERCOT, is facing increasing pressure to use electricity. The powerful, prolonged heat wave that blanketed California for much of the summer led to a surge in energy demand to cool homes.
ERCOT is facing energy supply shortages due to increased demand. It narrowly avoided widespread rolling blackouts this summer and warned that reserves were low and there was "no market solution". Reserve energy, mainly from natural gas plants, fell to 3,600 megawatts this month, just enough to power 750,000 homes in a region of 26 million people. The rolling blackouts were avoided in part because of a shift in power supply, with Texas dramatically increasing its use of solar energy at a critical time.
The grid is able to meet demand due to the construction of renewable energy, namely solar and wind, throughout the state. The two sources provide about 25 percent of ERCOT's electricity, with solar serving the grid particularly well during peak summer demand.
