Australia's largest solar farm is starting to export to the grid
The Australian arm of French renewable energy developer Neoen is rapidly moving towards full production on a massive 400-megawatt solar farm in the western Queensland Downs, which is now being exported to the grid.
Neoen Australia said the 400-megawatt solar farm, part of its $600 million Western Downs Green Power Centre, was under way and nearing completion in testing work with Queensland transmission network operator Powerlink and the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO).
While final testing and commissioning activities were continuing, Queensland Energy Minister Mick de Brenni said in a statement that the project, developed on a 1,500-hectare site near Chinchilla, had already begun producing electricity into the national electricity market.
"The largest solar farm under construction in Australia has reached a major milestone, with the project now able to export more than 100 megawatts of clean energy to the country's grid," the statement said.
"This solar farm is the largest of its kind in Australia and will be able to generate electricity for an area the size of Logan and Redlands combined," de Brenny said. "This is an important step towards achieving the government's target of 50% renewable energy by 2030."
